Tale Of Two Birthdays

This week I celebrated two birthdays.  Monday, August 4th was my 64th physical birthday. Tuesday, August 5th was my 32nd spiritual birthday!

I was born into a wonderful family.  We enjoyed a good and blessed life.  As some of you have heard before, I really was living the American dream for the first 32 years of my life.  However, I had no peace and was afraid of dying.  As I reflect back on those first 32 years of my life, I was a very selfish person who was a slave to sin.  I was constantly at war with God even though I did not know it at the time.  So it was impossible for me to experience any peace when I was not at peace with God.

That all changed on August 5th, 1982.  A couple weeks prior to August 5th, 1982, I had heard (heard with my heart, not just my ears) how I could have peace with God through our Lord, Jesus Christ from Romans 5:1.  After careful thought and consideration, I made a willful, informed, intentional decision to place my faith in Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord (Boss, Master, and King).  Immediately, I became a new person!  I began to think differently.  I began to act differently.  I began to talk differently.  A peace came upon me and has never left, even in the middle of occasional turmoil.  I desired to tell other folks about the great things the Lord had done for me.  My focus moved from temporary things (things of this world) to eternal things (things of the Kingdom of God).

When I compared the first half of my life with the second half, I see that the first 32 years I walked (lived) in darkness and for the last 32 years I have been walking (living) in the Light. The first half was empty and the second half I have enjoyed a fulfilled life (the abundant life which Jesus promises those who follow Him).  I could go on and on.  If anyone is interested, I would love to tell you more.  Bottom line is, there is no comparison with the first half and the second half of my life.  My only regret is that I did not choose to trust Jesus as my Savior and Lord at a much earlier age.  There certainly would be not as many scars.

After my birthday this past Tuesday, I am thankfully able to say I have had more time with Jesus than I have had without Him.

Grace And Peace To You All,
Alan Perry
Missions Pastor

Middle School Ministry

I wanted to take a moment to share with the church about some of the changes that will be taking place this coming fall pertaining to the middle school ministry!  I am excited about the direction God is taking us.  I am looking forward to seeing how God uses these changes next year.  Below is the letter that was sent out to middle school parents.  I wanted to attach this letter to the blog so parents of middle school students who have not yet seen it can be informed and to also let our church body as a whole know what we are doing.  If you have any questions regarding this letter or the middle school ministry, please feel free to call me at the church or email me at brad@brevardcommunity.org.

Dear Middle School Parents,

I am writing this letter to inform you of some changes that will take place starting this fall.  Currently, the middle school ministry offers a teaching time on Sunday mornings and small groups on Sunday evenings.  This has been a productive model for our ministry the last several years. However, as I pray for the future of our middle school ministry, God continues to show me the need for our kids to be able to put into action what they are learning Sunday mornings and evenings.  Through much prayer, brainstorming, and discussion with leaders and parents in our church, we have decided to change the way we do Sunday mornings.  I have sensed God saying that if we believe it is important for the adults of Brevard Community Church to serve, then it must be just as important for our students.

Beginning August 24th we will no longer have our teaching time Sunday mornings at 9:30.  Instead, there will be opportunities for middle school students to serve in the church.  As a church, we believe that one of the roles of a Christian is to serve in the church.  As we have seen, it allows people to learn more about themselves and God as they discover their roles in the local church.

I will be in the back of the worship center, August 10th  and 17th , with sign-up sheets for students to choose a place to serve.  I realize that not every middle school student will want to serve but for those who do, this is going to be an incredible opportunity for them to grow spiritually and connect with adults in the church.

Though we will no longer be meeting on Sunday mornings, we will still have an opportunity for our students to connect with one another, worship together, and hear from God’s word in a relevant and age sensitive way.  This will now be taking place on Wednesday nights from 6:30-7:30.  I am excited to have something specifically for our middle school students on Wednesday nights.  I understand that getting to church on Wednesday can be difficult with all that goes on during the week, but I do believe that for those who can come and bring their friends, this will be a great opportunity to worship and learn about God.  It will be structured similar to what we have on Sunday mornings currently, except now we will be able to offer worship on most nights and will provide food each week.

We will keep small groups from 5:00-7:00 on Sunday nights during the school year.  This will remain a time for us to connect with students and challenge them to go deeper in God’s word.

I know a lot is changing this year; but I am excited about what God is going to do through our students serving in the church, a new time for student worship, and small groups.  If you have questions or concerns or if you would like to serve in the middle school ministry, please feel free to contact me at the church 884-5932 or by email brad@brevardcommunity.org.

Thank you,
Brad Snipes
Middle School Student Pastor
