Joy Versus Happiness

Recently I read a post on a blog, People Of The Second Chance, about joy versus happiness. The reason I wanted to share this with you today is because so often we get caught up in this idea of being happy.  The truth is God never promises us happiness but does say that when we seek Him and follow after Him He will give us joy.  Joy comes from God and happiness comes from this world.  When we can really understand that there is more to life than just being happy a change begins to take place in our lives.  I hope this blog post is an encouragement to you today and challenges the way you think and see things.

WHAT’S JOY GOT TO DO WITH IT?
By: Heather Palacios

There is a difference between joy and happy.

Joy is like a hot air balloon, it lifts everybody up.  Happiness is like a helium balloon, it only lifts itself up.

Joy is not dependent on what is happening in our lives–joy is dependent on what is happening in our hearts.

If we have a heart and God is in it, joy is available. Boom!  We don’t have to buy it, we don’t have to gamble on it, we don’t have to exchange something for it.  In Isaiah 61, God says, “Instead of shame and dishonor, you shall have a double portion of prosperity and everlasting joy.”

Satan is going to try to show us the pain, not the point.  Satan is going to try to show us the loss not the gain.  Satan is going to try to show us the frustration not the blessing.  But Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may remain IN you and that YOUR joy may be full!”  Even though circumstances may hang like clouds over your life, joy is not lost or found in those clouds. Joy is in your heart.

The joy of a Christian is not a possibility, it is a reality. Joy is YOURS in HIM. Claim it. Receive it. Work it.

Regaining Our Focus

In our high-speed, ever changing, constantly plugged in, instant gratification, endless options, information overload culture; it is so easy to get bogged down in the trivial things and lose focus on what really matters most.

I experience this culture a lot at our family’s plumbing company.  Let me explain. In the past, when you decided to build a building, you would first sit down with an architect and have a complete set of plans and specifications drawn up. Most, if not all of the decisions were made prior to breaking ground. The cost was counted, the materials ordered, and everything from the paint to the door knobs were picked out. The plans and specifications communicated what the customer wanted so the contractor knew what he was supposed to build. This process made building a house pretty simple. The contractor would just follow the plan and do what it said. Having a plan allowed the contractor to focus, stay on track, plan ahead, and do the job well!

This process is changing. Now we have cell phones, Internet, text, and email. Plans and specifications are still drawn up but now changes can be made to them instantly. More often than not, only the major decisions are finalized and approved. This leaves everything else on the project undecided so the customer can surf the Internet and wade through the countless options available to them. Now, we break ground first and figure out the details later. Because of this, it’s not unusual for our project manager to get over fifty phone calls a day. Each call is a mini meeting that usually leads to more options, more questions, or more decisions that will need to be decided on when we get back to them with more information.

There are some advantages to having the flexibility to make spur of the moment changes or in prolonging decisions so you can consider your options, but the draw back is that it makes what used to be a pretty simple job a lot more complicated. And in my experience when things get complicated the potential for confusion, mistakes, and chaos increases drastically.

The same can be true in our spiritual lives as well. Think about it. God planned out all the details before He ever broke ground on creation. He knows the end from the beginning. He even gave us His Word so we can know Him, understand what He is building, and know what He wants from our lives. If we trust Him and follow His plan, life is really pretty simple. Just open the Word and do what it says. What would happen if we could just stay focused on living a simple life of obedient faith to our awesome God and Savior?

But the world gives us so much “freedom” to choose and so many options to choose from. Our culture encourages us to draw up our own plans and do life our own way. The world tells us to not commit to anything but instead to keep our options open just in case something better comes along.  All this seems like a good thing but in the end, it actually only makes things more complicated, confusing, and chaotic.  And when we live this way it always ends badly.

Something God is stirring up in my heart lately is a increasingly strong desire to live a simple, obedient, focused life of faith, much like those saints we see in Hebrews chapter eleven. With eyes of faith they saw Him who is unseen and they had such a confident expectation of receiving what God had promised that it caused them to leave the chaos of the world behind and go out boldly in faith.  They didn’t get so caught up in the trivial things of this world because they had their eyes fixed on God and their hearts set on the better world that He had promised them.  Their focus on eternity allowed them to navigate this temporary world with great wisdom.  They simply listened to God the great architect and builder of creation and did what He said. And look what happened. Sure, they probably seemed strange to the people of their day, but now we count them as the heroes of our faith.

The writer of Hebrews then goes on to say that now it’s our turn to join with them and live those same kinds of simple, focused, obedient lives of faith.

“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:1-2

So today:

Lay aside the sin and even the “good” things that are causing you to stumble.

Follow Christ and run towards His Heavenly Kingdom with all you have and don’t quit.

Fix your eyes on Him, follow His example, and trust Him.

And remember, He will be with you every step of the way.

Independence Day!

As most of you realize, we are very blessed to live in a country where we are free.  I enjoy learning about the history of our country.  Some of you have heard the saying that America is a “divine experiment” meaning that God has a plan for America. I enjoy reading about how God intervened in the establishment of the United States. I want to share with you one particular story from the Revolutionary War.

The Battle of Long Island Decided by Sudden, Inexplicable Fog
On Aug. 27, 1776, just weeks after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the British forces already had George Washington and his Continental Army on the ropes in New York City. There was no escape across the East River, as the Brooklyn Bridge hadn't been invented yet, and the water was thick with British warships -- the start of a long tradition of the East River being full of debris. As the British closed in, it looked very much like the American Revolution was over just a few weeks in.
The Divine Intervention: The weather took an unseasonable turn for the worse in New York on Aug. 29, and for the Continental Army, this seemed like another element to add to a long list of grievances, being that they were trapped, outnumbered, ill-equipped, poorly trained, freezing and starving, and it was raining. It seemed as if God was punishing the Americans with the same weather that usually makes everyone hate England in the first place.
But this rain turned out to be one of the best-disguised blessings in history, as it was so foggy the next morning that one could "scarcely discern a man from six yards' distance," which meant the Brits had to sit on their thumbs until the fog passed. What was more, for some reason, the fog "concealed from the British the operations of the Americans, while at New York the atmosphere was perfectly clear." In other words, the only parts of the city that were foggy were the parts the Brits needed to see through to figure out what the Washington was up to.
Washington did not need to shoot the British the next morning; he just needed to get the out of Brooklyn with enough of his army to continue and win the war with. This fog provided him with precisely the time and the cover he needed to successfully sneak all 9,000 of his men into Manhattan while the British sat back and reminisced about this jolly good London weather. It was like Washington shouted, "Cover me!" at God, and God had complied like world's greatest buddy cop. There was not a single loss of life, and Washington was the last one to leave Long Island ... immediately after he snatched his whole army and the Revolution straight out of the British Empire's back pocket.
                                                                                          By Jacopo della Quercia
This story reminds me that God is still in control.  Even when things seem hopeless or impossible, God still has a plan and is always in control of every situation.  With our freedom today, I think we should celebrate that God is in control. I am excited to hear that 17 of our high school football players prayed to receive Christ at a recent FCA camp!  God has a plan for you, for your kids, for your community, and for our nation. Trust God, remember He is in control and wants to use us for the plan, which is to make Himself known to the world.
God Bless and Have a Great Independence Day!
